REVIEW: London Luxe hair Dye from Vidal Sassoon

So, a few months ago, I was picked to test my choice of colours from the London Luxe line of hair dye free thanks to Vidal Sassoon through BzzAgent.

I had just dyed my hair when I found out so it’s taken me this long to re-dye it – but I’m here to share my new love!

Now, I’ve been dyeing my hair Blue Black since high school (with some purples and burgundies thrown in for good measure), so it was going to take something special to turn my head.

So, I chose the Deep Velvet Violet shade (3VR) and went to work yesterday and let me tell you – I think I have a new favourite!

I like having dark hair that has a flash of another shade in the right light and this colour does just that. It keeps the darkness that I love but adds a vibrant pop of colour that is like a little surprise when the sun hits it just right.

velvetviolet_2It was actually a really nice dye to work with – it didn’t stink (yay!), it went on easy and only took 30 minutes to process.

The colour is supposed to last up to 8 weeks, which is great. I’ve found a lot of red or purple shades seem to fade quickly so I’m looking forward to not having to touch it up too often (but it’s pretty reasonably priced, so that’s another bonus).

I think this may be my new go-to shade (though I’d love to try London Lilac shade to see the difference)! And I see they also have a Blue Black version (Midnight Muse Blue) so maybe I’ll switch brands altogether!

Julep’s Your Cuticles Look Thirsty Review

I’m already a huge fan of Julep’s Cuticle Oil. I love the little roller bottle and use it every day, so when they announced the new beauty product for July was going to be a new hand care item, I knew I had to try it.

A super-charged mixture of honey, shea butter, vitamin B5, and salicylic acid that hydrates and heals dry, damaged cuticles.

What it does:

  • Honey soothes and heals while retaining water to moisturize skin
  • Salicylic acid lifts away dead cells for a bright, healthy appearance
  • Shea butter enhances moisture
  • Vitamin B5 helps everything penetrate quickly (aka no greasy residue)

0.5 fl oz / 15 mL

Your Cuticles Look Thirsty looks like a whipped balm but it’s thicker, almost like the consistency of Noxema face cream. It’s semi-solid, and all you need is the tiniest swirl of it to cover every last cuticle.

The scent is light, the same scent as Julep’s Rock Star Hand Cream, which is nice. And the best part is it doesn’t go on greasy. You can literally swipe it on and then get back to work immediately without worry about getting your keyboard (or whatever device you may be using) getting messy.

Plus…My cuticles have never looked better! Immediately soft and nourished, I was hooked from the first application. At first, I instantly wished it came in a bigger jar but when i realized how little you actually need to use per application, I can see why they chose the size they did (I’d still totally buy the bigger jar if they ever put one out though…hint hint!)

If you want to give some extra care to your cuticles, be sure to grab a jar and add Your Cuticles Look Thirsty to your daily nail care ritual.

L’Oreal Paris Fibralogy Haircare Review

So, I feel I’ve had enough time to properly test and experiment with the L’Oreal Paris Fibralogy shampoo, booster and conditioner.

So here we go. When I started testing the shampoo, I had hair about halfway down my back (I’ve since cut it to shoulder-length).

I really liked the shampoo and conditioner from the start but I found that even with the first couple of applications, the booster made my hair super tangled.

I tried it between the shampoo & conditioner (as the instructions stated) and also putting it on after applying conditioner but it didn’t help.

My hair felt extremely tangled, brittle, and elastic, and it was only worse when I went to comb my hair after I got out of the shower.

To be honest, I have stopped using the booster and simply use the shampoo & conditioner.

In terms of volume, I felt it did give my hair some boost, so it does what it says it will do.

But I know I would not use the booster again, so I don’t know if it’s worth it for me to buy the set. I also want my hair to be healthy & strong and I didn’t like how it felt after using the booster.

If you want to try before you buy, you can actually sign up for a free sample, which I suggest you do to see if your hair reacts the same way. All in all, I liked the fragrance and it did give me some added boost, but I don’t like the trade-off for having massively tangled hair.

Either way, it was nice to try something new & I thank L’Oreal and Influenster for sending me the products free in exchange for my honest review.

Review: Revlon Moon Candy Nail Polish

I’m a serious magpie when it comes to glitter polishes, let me tell you.

If it sparkles, I need it.

So, when I spied the Revlon Moon Candy line on a recent shopping trip, I knew I had to try it! I somehow managed to limit myself to just one shade, but I could have easily bought like half the collection.

Revlon Nail Art Moon Candy™ allows you to get a gorgeous, iridescent effect inspired by outer space. The holographic glitter top coat is illuminated by the dark cream base coat, giving your nails a multi-dimensional look. The dual-ended package gives you everything you need to create a fun, cosmic look.

Anyway, I picked up #280 – ORBIT, which has a dark purple creme base and holographic glitter flakie topcoat with purply-bluish hues.

The base color is dark – very dark. So you can totally get away with doing only 1 coat. The problem is the topcoat.

1 coat of base color

Even though I let the base dry for half an hour before I added the topcoat, it still dragged and took some of the base coat with it, leaving it looking a little patchy.

I also had to really swirl the topcoat and lay it on thick to get it to show up. This is how it looked after 2 coats.

Like I said above, you can get away with just 1 coat of the base color.

As for the topcoat, the flakies are jagged and can leave a texture if you decide to use multiple layers without a separate clear topcoat.

After using 1 coat of Julep’s Freedom Topcoat (over 2 coats of the Orbit flakie topcoat), the texture was less pronounced, so it wasn’t too much of a big deal for me.

I love the idea of having the base and topcoats all in one but I didn’t love the bottle design. I was a little paranoid that standing it on either end would allow the other end to leak.

I also found it a little tricky to open one end without the other twisting in my hand. And it also felt a little top-heavy when using it.

MY RATING (out of 5)

I liked the idea of Revlon’s Moon Candy but wasn’t completely sold on the results. Maybe if I’d done 2 base coats I wouldn’t have had the same patchiness, but I also used 2 layers of the flakie topcoat and it still didn’t show through as much as I would have liked.

February 2015 Julep Maven Box

The Afterglow Collection has arrived – and it’s spectacular!

So, as you may have seen in my other post, I completely customized and added onto my February Maven box from Julep. And I think I have pretty great taste, if I do say so myself!

It doesn’t hurt that Julep has countless shades to choose from, but before I get to my picks, let’s talk about the box itself.

One thing I noticed from my first box is Julep makes every box feel like it was picked and packed by your best friend exclusively for you.

The hot pink box, the colorful crinkles & tissue paper, cute quotes and not to mention coupon codes – it makes receiving your monthly box that much more special!

But enough of that. On to the polishes!

As a Bombshell, I get 2 polishes & 1 beauty item, but I’m a new maven and I want as much polish as I can get so I decided to do a little swapping to get colors I would love.

Keiko, Hazel, Colton, Becky, Elise and Hartleigh

As you can see, I customized my picks to include Colton, Keiko and Elise.

As I mentioned before, there are also a ton of deals to be had when purchasing your Maven box, so I also added on a few more polishes:

The Metamorphic Topcoat Trio (which includes Bjork, Tilda and Tyra)julep_metamorphictrio

To the uninitiated, these may all look the same but each polish really shines when you use it over another polish:

Bjork (It Girl) – Blue pearlescent silk top coat
Tyra (Boho Glam) – Magenta pearlescent silk top coat
Tilda (Bombshell) – Green pearlescent silk top coat

I also added Hazel & Becky and received Hartleigh as the Valentine’s Day gift from Jane (CEO of Julep) and a free gift of Face Primer.

Talk about a bounty! It was like Christmas in February!

My thoughts on Julep so far? LOVE IT! So many choices and ways to make the experience entirely yours. SO much fun! I rarely spend money on makeup or beauty products, save for my basics of foundation, concealer and pressed powder, so it’s nice to have something to look forward to and especially nice to pamper myself.

Because if I don’t treat myself, who will?!

I also love that most of Julep’s polishes are 5-Free (clear of formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, DBP, camphor, and animal ingredients or byproducts).

The fun continues this week, too, as the new Maven Reveal happens on Friday for all the new March colors. I’ll be sure to share them when they come out!

Review: Joe Fresh Nail Polish in Twilight

I’ve passed by the Joe Fresh nail polish station in our local Real Canadian Superstore a billion times and only browsed but last week, I decided to give their nail polish a try.

Upon first glance, the collection may make a polish lover a little weak in the knees. SO many shades to choose from. SO much loveliness!

I’m a dark polish lover so of course, I gravitated to the blacks & greys and after thumbing through a few bottles, cherry picked TWILIGHT that, upon first glance, I thought was just your average black jelly.

I stand corrected! When I picked up the bottle, I was kind of a little gobsmacked. Lovely, chunky duochrome flakies that can look blue, green or gold depending on the light. So pretty!

Using one of the swatch cards they have at the counter, I did a quick swatch and continued browsing and when it dried, I had another look and was pleasantly surprised at the bronzey-green shine in the sunlight.

LOVE it! It takes a staple like black polish and gives it a smouldering edge.

twilight_closeupCOVERAGE: 3 coats

The first coat? Yeah, I was a bit worried. It was more of a sheer grey but after 2 more thin coats, it built up to an opaque finish. Next time, I may do a black basecoat before using Twilight.

PRICE: $4 each or 3 for $10

You can’t go wrong for that price! I love that they are small enough that you can try out a few shades until you find your favourite without breaking the bank.

LONGEVITY: 3-4 days

After 2 full days, I started seeing some minor chipping on the tips of my nails.  This is after normal everyday wear-and-tear and wearing rubber gloves while doing dishes or cleaning but not in the shower. I also did 1 coat of Julep’s Freedom Polymer Topcoat.

3 days in, slightly more chipping, not so noticeable. 4 days in, noticeable chipping that makes me either want to touch it up or do a new mani.

MY RATING (out of 5): 🌟🌟🌟1/2

In terms of colour & coverage, I’d give it a 4.5, but in terms of longevity, I’d go with 3.5. I wish it lasted longer, but as I said next time I’m going to try a base coat of black and use Twilight as a topper.

My First Julep Box

I’ve been meaning to post this for a while but…I received my first Julep box!

I signed up for my subscription to start in January using the code FROSTYFREE to get my first box free for pre-paying for the first 3 months.

julep_frostyfreeFROSTYFREE Box included 3 polishes and 1 Gel Eye Glider

My BFF has been a Maven for over a year and I’m not gonna lie, she’s the one who got me hooked! Over the past year, I’ve seen her Julep blog posts and love the polishes she’s been getting.

Not just the endless hues and quality of the polish but the FUN of getting a new box of goodies every month!

For my birthday, she gave me a bunch of Julep polishes and yup…with just one mani, I was hooked!

So, I pretty much knew I was going to treat myself to a Julep subscription in the New Year. I don’t go out splurging on clothes or makeup or anything else so I figured, why not?! I deserve a treat!

And lo & behold, my first Maven box arrived and I fell in love.

The FROSTYFREE box had 3 polishes – Fazia, Michelle and Sienna. Gorgeous colors which I’ve already used more than once.

It took me so long to post this that the time has come for my 2nd box and my first time to really get the full Maven experience!

February’s theme at Julep is The Afterglow Collection!

The Afterglow Collection via JULEP

The Afterglow Collection via JULEP

Every month, the new Maven Window opens. After completing your style profile, you are put into a specific category which determines which polish colors and/or makeup you will receive in your monthly box.

Custom colors just for you! But here’s the cool part…no matter your profile, you can log into the Julep website and completely switch up your choices if you don’t like one (or any) of the colors. How cool is that?!

Anticipation is HIGH for the Maven Window to open. I mean, people get all antsy for the window to open but once it does, those highly coveted shades are snapped up like hotcakes!

Even with a few hiccups on the website, I was able to log in and view my box. Initially, my box (THE BOMBSHELL) was supposed to come with:

  • Elise: Indigo with purple microshimmer
  • Keiko: Charred olive shimmer
  • Glow Highlighting Powder: An ultralight powder luminizer that feels weightless and looks flawless.
February hues from the Afterglow Collection

February hues from the Afterglow Collection

COLORS ABOVE: Carla, Colton, Elise, Hazel, Brandis, Becky, London, Keiko, Jess)

I loved both of the polish choices but since I’m still a new Maven, I wanted to maximize my polish stash so I opted to swap the Highlighting Powder with a different polish.

Another cool thing about being a Maven is there are a bunch of add-ons that are super cheap every month. You can either purchase them outright or use your accumulated Jules (reward points). Again, as a new Maven, I didn’t have any Jules to use, but I did snag a couple of extra polishes for super sweet deals!

Since I added on extras, I’ll also be receiving a free gift with purchase, as well as a free bottle of Hartleigh, the Valentine-themes polish going out to every Maven for February.

Hartleigh, free for all Mavens in February

Hartleigh, free for all Mavens in February

Yeah…my box cannot get here soon enough! I may have to grab my sleeping bag and camp out near the mailroom!

As if THAT weren’t enough, there’s also a Secret Store that opens every month for Mavens who took their box (as opposed to skipping that month’s box, which is an option if you don’t care for the colors or just want to wait). There are even MORE deals to be had in the Secret Store (many of which are previous shades, previously unavailable shades or single shades from the current collection).

All in all, the choices are dizzying! With so many options, add-ons, deals and coupon codes, I can see why setting a budget will be a good thing!

I’ve seen people complaining about things being slow, about colors selling out, about one person getting a freebie over another but honestly, I’m just happy to get goodies I like and with anticipation for new boxes and deals at a fever pitch, it’s no surprise it takes time for all those orders to go out.

Having said all that, I’ve had a pretty great experience with Julep so far, and I can pretty much guarantee I’ll be extending my subscription beyond the initial 3 months I signed up for!

So, are you a Maven? How has your experience been? When you first signed up, did you find the choices overwhelming? What’s your favorite shade (as if you can pick only 1!)? And what Style Profile are you? Share your thoughts below!

There are always a bunch of codes to get a discounted or free introductory box, but if you want to sign up, feel free to use my referral linkyou’ll get your first box FREE and it’ll get me a few extra Jules to put toward one of the polishes on my Wishlist!
